Cycling Advocacy

Funding
Bicycle advocates and a broad national coalition rose up against a U.S. House attack on a dedicated funding program for bikeways. The resounding 327-90 vote to restore funding provided momentum going into Congress’s drafting of the new six-year transportation bill. The result: no further attacks on bike provisions in either the House or Senate versions.
Safe Routes to School

A significant addition was a Safe Routes to School program ($70 million in the Senate, $250 million in the House). According to Rep. Timothy Johnson (15th District-Urbana), “Walking or biking to school teaches kids the habit of physical activity. That leads to a healthier America.” Legislators have until March to finalize the bill. For a free, step-by-step guidebook on how to get more children walking and biking to schools safely in your town, go to www.saferoutestoschool.org
